At the 2025 Nobel Prize, two Japanese scientists won prizes in physiology and chemistry, respectively.

Professor Shimon Sakaguchi, winner of the physiological medicine category, discovered a 'regulatory T cell' that regulates our body's immune system. Simply put, they discovered a 'safety device' to prevent immune cells in the body from accidentally attacking their cells. This discovery is expected to be of great help in researching autoimmune diseases and cancer treatment.

In the chemical sector, Professor Susumu Kitagawa has developed special structures (MOFs) made of metals and organic materials. MOFs have a large surface area like sponges, which can be used to solve environmental problems, such as absorbing carbon dioxide in the air, collecting water, and storing harmful gases.

The award shows that Japanese scientists' research, even in a difficult and specialized field, can actually be linked to solving human health and environmental problems. Experts say that both studies could bring about major changes in healthcare and the environment in the future
